What a Couples Massage Actually Is

A couples massage is two massages happening at once, in one room, with a separate licensed therapist for each person. Two tables go side by side. Both sessions start on the same clock and finish on the same clock. That is the entire definition, and most of the confusion around the term comes from people assuming it means something more elaborate.

It is worth ruling out the things it is not, because all three get mixed up with it.

It is not one therapist working on two people in turn. Nobody is waiting on a chair while their partner goes first. Two therapists are in the room, one for each of you, working simultaneously.

It is not a class where you learn to give each other a massage. Those exist and they are a different product entirely. Here, neither of you does any of the work.

It is also not the same as a four-hands massage, though the two sit at identical prices on this menu and get confused constantly. Four-hands means two therapists working on one person at the same time, mirroring each other across a single body. Couples means two therapists working on two people. Same headcount, completely different experience, and if you say the wrong one on the phone you will get the wrong booking.

The word couples does most of the damage in the name. It describes the room rather than the relationship. The suite holds two people who want to be in it together, and nobody at the front desk is checking what those two people are to each other. Friends book it. Sisters book it. A mother and her adult daughter book it. Two people who finished a brutal quarter at work book it as a full stop on the year. The romantic version is common but it is not the requirement.

What you get for the price is a private room rather than a divided section of a larger one. The door closes. The lighting is low and the same for both of you, since you are sharing one environment, which is the small trade you make for sharing the hour.

The sessions themselves stay individual underneath the shared setting. Each of you talks with your own therapist before anything starts, so the massage one of you receives has no obligation to resemble the other. Different pressure, different focus, different technique, all inside the same room and the same sixty or ninety or hundred and twenty minutes.

What a couples massage is not, in any version, is a medical treatment. It is bodywork by licensed therapists, and nothing on this page or on the table is a diagnosis. If either of you is being treated for something, is pregnant, or is coming off an injury, raise it with your doctor first and then tell your therapist in the room.

The practical reason people choose it over two solo appointments is simple. You experience the same hour instead of comparing notes about two different ones afterward.
