When One of You Has Never Had a Massage

Advice for pairs where one partner books massages regularly and the other has never been on a table, so the hour works for both of them.

A lot of couples bookings are lopsided. One person has a regular therapist and a preferred modality. The other has never been on a table and only agreed to this because it was framed as a nice evening.

That gap is normal and it is easy to handle, but it needs about two minutes of honesty before anyone books.

The nervous partner is usually worried about one of three things. Being undressed in front of a stranger. Not knowing what they are supposed to do. Or the vague sense that they will somehow be bad at it. All three are worth saying out loud, because all three have short answers.

You stay covered the whole time. You undress alone in the room, get under the sheet, and only the part being worked on is uncovered while it is being worked on. Nobody sees anything they do not need to see.

There is nothing you are supposed to do. Lie down. Breathe. Your therapist positions you, moves your arm if your arm needs moving, and tells you when to turn over. Being passive is the correct behavior, not a failure of participation.

And there is no skill involved, so there is no way to be bad at it. The only thing you can genuinely get wrong is staying quiet when something hurts.

Now the advice for the experienced partner, which matters more than people expect. Do not order for them. Do not tell the front desk that they will want deep tissue because deep tissue is what you want. Do not sell them on ninety minutes when sixty is plenty for a first time. A first massage that ran twenty minutes too long or ten pounds too firm is how somebody decides massage is not for them, and that is a hard opinion to reverse later.

Sixty minutes is the right first booking. It is long enough to be a real session and short enough that nobody is checking the clock.

Tell the therapist it is a first massage. Say it at the consultation, in those words. It changes how they start, how often they check in, and how much they explain as they go. Therapists here handle it constantly and none of them will make it a thing.

A few reactions surprise first-timers and are all completely ordinary. Falling asleep. Feeling ticklish somewhere unexpected. A stomach that gurgles loudly when you finally relax. Wanting to talk for the first five minutes and then not wanting to. None of it is a problem and none of it needs an apology.

The one thing to actually watch for is the instinct to say the pressure is fine when it is not. The experienced partner should say this out loud in the car on the way in. Fine is not a rating. If it hurts, say lighter, immediately, and the therapist will adjust without any awkwardness at all.
