For Two People Visiting Salt Lake City

Notes for travelers staying downtown, including why late arrivals work, what the dry high-desert air does to you, and how to book from out of state.

If you are in town for a few days and staying downtown, the suite is close. The address is on State Street south of the hotel district, a short ride from the core, and no part of getting there involves a canyon or a freeway you have never driven.

Two things about this valley are worth knowing before you arrive, because both change how a massage feels here.

The first is elevation. The valley floor sits well above four thousand feet, and if you flew in from somewhere near sea level your body notices within a day. The second is how dry the air is. Utah is high desert, and visitors consistently underestimate it. Drink considerably more water than you would at home, on the days around your booking as much as the day of it.

The third factor, if you have been on a plane, is simply that flying leaves people stiff in specific and predictable places. Neck, upper back, hips. Say so at the consultation and your therapist will spend the time where the travel actually landed.

The hours suit travelers better than most spas do. The doors are open from ten in the morning until ten at night, seven days a week, which covers both the arrival day where you land in the evening with nothing planned and the departure day where you have a late flight and an afternoon to fill. A booking that starts at eight at night is a normal thing here rather than a special request.

For a ski trip, the useful window is the day after rather than the day of. Whether you were up one of the canyons or on the road for a week, legs and lower backs take the hit, and the version of this booking where both of you get worked on the following afternoon is the one people are glad they made.

Booking from out of state is a phone call. The number is (801) 839-8880 and the spa runs on Mountain Time, which trips up callers from both coasts more often than you would think. Call a few days ahead if your trip has fixed dates. The suite holds two therapists at once, so it is not the sort of thing to leave until you have landed, particularly on a weekend or over a holiday.

Sixty minutes is $165, ninety is $245, two hours is $325. A half hour in the infrared sauna can be added for thirty dollars, which is a reasonable thing to want after a cold day outdoors.

One practical note for the last day of a trip. Do not book a session that ends an hour before you need to be at the airport. You will not be in the mood to hurry, and the whole point was to not have to.
